Most people do not realize how important carport anchors truly are. If you own a carport or are seriously thinking about buying one, you will find that there are many rules and regulations which you must follow. One of the most important rules has to do with the proper anchoring or tying down of an outdoor shelter. Each climate region has different rules but most require that you anchor a shelter to a solid level surface like a concrete or cement slab. The regulations may require that you use a certain type of anchor or a specific amount of space between each anchor. Carport installation as a whole must follow the specific rules of a town or county.
If you are tackling a carport building project by yourself but you do not have building experience, it may be wise to contact a building inspector or professional contractor when it is time to anchor down the shelter. It is especially important to properly secure or anchor down a free standing carport. Free standing carports can be installed anywhere you like but you still have to properly secure it in place for your safety, the safety of your car, and especially for the safety of others. A shelter that is not properly secured could easily become a flying projectile during a severe thunderstorm with high winds or a tornado. In most storms, damage to a shelter is minor, but should one topple over or fly away, the result could be deadly.
Most carport manufacturing companies will recommend that you first contact your local building code department before you make a shelter purchase. In some cases you will need to supply the building inspector with the plans or specifics about the shelter. Once you have the inspector’s approval you can then rest assured that you are getting the right shelter for the area in which you live. If the shelter does not come with anchors, the inspector will be able to tell you what type of anchors will work best for the type of shelter you want.
