Some kitchen designs lend themselves to the use of pantry doors while others do not. The ones that do often have more of a country kitchen type of style or a family style of kitchen. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a pantry off of your kitchen in a modern design, it is just less likely. Actually, what is less likely is having a door that is obviously used for the pantry. The pantry in the modern kitchen may still be there, but it will be camouflaged, so to speak, behind a matching wood panel to the kitchen cabinets. This type of design is used for the faces of the appliances as well. However, in recent years, stainless steel has really taken the place of these wood-faced appliance features. It is a matter of personal preference. Some people want to really show off their new brand name commercial kitchen appliances, while others would rather have them blend into the kitchen decor.
Neither style is right, just what makes sense to the homeowner. This same attitude can be applied toward pantry door design. The most common type of door is the wood framed, glass panel style. These can utilize any variety of wood from an ash or light oak to a darker wood like walnut, cherry or mahogany. The glass insert panel is usually opaque so that the contents of the pantry are not readily visible from the interior of the kitchen. However, if you wanted a clear glass door, this could be ordered as well. The glass is often etched or adorned with images or words reflective of the space it is in. The etched or opaque glass allows light to penetrate into the pantry while keeping visibility to a minimum.
The cost of a pantry door varies with the type of wood choices, glass designs and other features. You can order a pre-hung pantry door as well, which may reduce your cost over a custom installed style. Since most building codes and regulation specify these dimensions, you will be likely able to find one that matches the jamb size of your pantry. With the standard jamb size of 30”, a poplar wood door could cost close to $225 USD. For a more exotic wood choice, like mahogany or walnut, the cost may be something more like $400-500 USD. You can find other doors made of thinner glass panels and engineered wood products for less. If you really want your kitchen to be impressive, spend the extra money on the quality pantry door.
