There is quite a trend in home decoration to keep things simple and kitchen curtains are no exception to that. In fact it has always been the case that simple is better in the kitchen, trend or not. There was a fashion thirty years ago for hanging very frilly festoon blinds (sometimes called Austrian blinds) in the kitchen. Of course, we all thought they looked wonderful at the time but we were obviously not using our heads in decorating our windows!
It is important that you don’t swathe your kitchen windows in too much fabric as it is good to have plenty of light coming into your kitchen during the day. All you need is a simple way of covering the window at night to give some privacy. Too many frills and flounces look out of place and over the top in a room that is supposed to be essentially practical and functional. A “no nonsense” approach is best here and if you just remember “Simple is best” when buying curtains for the kitchen you’ll do fine. So choose simple headings for your curtains or a plain window valance or cornice if you prefer to cover the curtain rod and heading.
You will always find that kitchen curtains need frequent washing due to the greasy, steamy air there so it is better if you have simple washable curtains so that you can launder and iron them with ease. (Just imagine how much grease and grime the folds of those fancy blinds in the Eighties used to gather and how difficult they were to clean and press.)
The easier your curtains are to hang the better because half the battle with keeping curtains clean is taking them down and hanging them up again. Tab tops would work well for this because the kind of rod or rail which uses curtain hooks can be fiddly and inevitably some of the hooks get lost.
