Most people like the great outdoors particularly if the weather is good. For many, spending time at home enjoying the garden or patio is essential leisure. The patio is usually at the rear of most homes where you can relax in private and enjoy the surroundings. Access onto you patio area is usually via a door way. This door way may lead directly from a lounge or kitchen onto the patio. Access may be via a sliding patio door. These door units have been used in the home for many years now. Many new homes are built incorporating sliding doors that open onto a patio.

Sliding patio doors are usually quite large and therefore let lots of light shine through into the room. They are quite easy to install. You may have a room with a standard window fitted. To convert this window to a patio door is relatively simple job. It will involve removing the old window and cutting out the portion of the wall immediately below the window sill, which is none load bearing. Some making good of the walls at the cut positions will be necessary. There are no structural alternations as the lintel above the existing window will remain in place. Obtaining permission from your local building inspector should be relatively straight forward. Probably their main interest will be in the glass use in the new patio doors. Regulations dictate that it should conform to particular rules from a thermal efficiency point of view. This relates to the rate the glass will allow heat to transfer. The building inspector will also be interested in the safety features of the glass. All glass windows and doors below a certain height (usually 800mm from finished floor level) must be safety glass. The purpose of the safety glass is to reduce injury. If someone accidentally falls against the glass, and the pane breaks, features inherent in safety glass will prevent serious injury.

Sliding type doors would be the normal choice for smaller openings up to say 2.8 m. If the opening is much larger perhaps 5 m then other door systems, such as folding sliding doors, should be considered. This system consists of a number of doors connected to each other with hinges. To open simply fold each door onto its neighbor and slide the entire door system to one side. They are more expensive than the sliding only doors but well worth a consideration.

Installing a range hood over the stove is a great way to reduce smoke and grease levels and prevent it from spreading throughout the house. Besides helping to keep the air clean, it provides a more pleasant place for cooking, especially when cooking foods that are capable of producing smoke or grease. The big advantage is that range hoods do not cost much and are quite easy to install. In fact, once you buy the hood itself, the project is one that can be completed within a few hours.

The first thing to do is turn off the kitchen electricity supply. Then test the wires to make sure there is no electricity running through them.

To start the project, you must gather the necessary tools. You will need the following:

Screwdrivers

Drill

Drill Extension

Someone to help hold the cover in place while you install it

Wire nuts and screws (usually included with a new kit)

Light Bulb (make sure you have the correct size and power for the model you are installing).

Remove the existing range hood and set it on the side. Now you want to clean up the area, removing dust and debris that has accumulated with a soft, dry cloth. If you must use a slightly damp cloth, be sure to dry before installing the new cover.

Underneath the hood is a cover. This is in place to protect the fan and wiring. Carefully remove the panel or the lid. Remove the parts that are in there (the fan, filter, and light, are usually what you find). There will be two holes in the hood. One for the ducting that goes through the ceiling, and one for ducting that goes out through the outer wall.

Now you want to line the hood properly before drilling. Have an assistant hold it while you align the holes for the locking screws. Put the screws halfway through using a drill. Line the holes in the extractor with the existing ducting system. Make sure it is aligned as closely as you can possibly get.

With another person holding the hood, finish putting the screws with the drill.

Replace the inside of the hood with the items that were previously removed (light, fan, filters, etc..) Now you want to connect all the wires. They must be coded by color (black goes with black, white goes to white, and so on and so forth). Take the wire connectors or wire nut (small pieces that cover the ends of the wires) and put them at the ends of the wires that you have just matched up.

Gently push the wires back inside the unit and screw the back panel in a position to protect them. We recommend using a manual screwdriver to avoid scratching the surface. Screw the bulb in.

Turn on to test and check every function of the hood (light, different levels of speed, fan, etc.).

Check the opening to the outside to ensure that the air escapes as expected.

Now you have installed the new hood. The appearance and the function should serve you well.

There is nothing worse than the build up of dirt and discoloration of your grout and tile.  As it builds up, it begins to detract from your overall appearance of the room.  Many people have tile floors, tile in their showers and tile as a backslash in their kitchens.  Grout is used to fill in the spaces between tiles as well as to prevent moisture, insects and dirt to get in between the tile and the sub floor or sub counter area.  Cleaning tile and grout will help to keep the tile looking great and clean as well as extending the life of your tiled areas.

Many people loath the thought of cleaning grout. But, cleaning the grout is not as hard as it may seem.  You just have to follow some simple steps.  Once you have done this, then perhaps you will do it much more often to extend the life of the grout and the overall appearance of the room.

The first thing you should do is to thoroughly sweep and clean the area with soap and water, making sure you rinse and let is dry before tackling the grout.  There are several products you can use to clean with.  Abrasives, household cleaners and even vinegar and water can clean grout.  Bleach based products work well too on some types of grout.  Make sure that you do not use bleach on colored grout as it may tarnish, lighter, or even bleach out the color.  You should use a stiff brush.  You can purchase a grout brush at a hardware store that does a great job.  You merely apply the grout cleaning compound to the grout area and using the stiff brush, clean the grout.  This should take care of any stains, mold and mildew.

If you experience tough stains, you can use a steam cleaner or even get commercial strength grout cleaner at the hardware store.  This may get those difficult areas clean.  Always try out your cleaning agent in a small area to make sure it does not hurt or discolor the grout.  If these steps do not work, you can hire a tile and grout cleaning company to professionally do the job.

Once the grout has been thoroughly cleaned, you may want to reseal it to protect the grout and make it last longer.  You will most certainly be pleased with the appearance of your tile once you have cleaned the tile and grout.  It will be a noticeable difference and you will appreciate the hard work you put in.

One returns home in a joyous mood after having a happy weekend outing with the family. However, all the joy vanishes in the thin air when one realizes that the bunch of the house keys has gone missing in the outing revelry. But, the powered digital locks are generally for a higher level of security and are part of an integrated security system in many cases. Whether directly powered or running on batteries, most of these locks, made of high-quality stainless steel or brass, are weather-proof. These locks come in push-button, knob and lever handle varieties and can be opened from inside or outside. Some locks automatically lock a door when it is closed.

While biometric door locks are certainly becoming more popular, the more basic RFID digital door lock that operates using a key card is still far more common. This type of lock uses a sensor in the door lock to detect a “key”, which is just a chip that is embedded in a card that the homeowner carries in their wallet or purse. When the card is brought in close proximity to the door, the digital lock open automatically. This is very convenient for most people as it means you just need to get your wallet or purse near the door and the door unlocks for you. Each of these types of locks has a unique code that works between the key card and the door lock, but multiple locks in a single home can be keyed for the same key card.

There are obviously many choices in digital door locks for your home. And while still relatively expensive, the costs are coming down qickly as the technology becomes more widspread. The RFID digital door lock with a key card offers good value and extreme ease of use that is simlar to the familiar concept of traditional locks and keys. The biometric locks offer a higher degree of security and are more expensive, but if you need this level of security in your home, the technology is finally far enough along that you can get a very good biometric system installed in your home by a local contractor.
